Here Come The Masses
Just when we thought we knew exactly what Internet shoppers wanted, the rules are changing. Why? For most of the Net's short life only 15% to 20% of the North American public has used it. Now those numbers are shooting up.
The latest surveys show 40% to 50% or more are now online using the Internet on a regular basis. That's great news if you have your business online or if you're thinking about getting your biz on the Net. Huge increases in audience mean more shoppers, more businesses online, and more lucrative business-to-business commerce.
This new mass of people is a little different in what they expect from your web site. These folks aren't techies. Most of them won't touch anything that seems technical or hard to learn. They aren't going to wait around for pages to load, or shop on order pages that seem confusing, or put up with a site that's hard to navigate.
Surveys released in recent days show the masses want sites that are simple, fast loading, and easy to understand. New Internet converts see slow loading graphics and 404 errors like a store with clerks that don't pay attention to customers. Make sure shoppers know exactly where they are in the order process. Check all links. The masses interpret a broken link as a faulty web site and a company they can't trust.
