Don't Ditch Your Simple Web Site Yet
Many web sites owners figured with the popularity of 56K modems it was time to add a LOT more graphics to their web sites. One big web design firm told me their corporate clients insist on pages weighted down with custom graphics. Those site slook terrific, as long as you've got a fast modem to download them quickly.
Oops! There's a kink in the plan. Last week Jupiter Communications announced 78% of us will still be using slow dial-up telephone lines well into the year 2003. That means lots-of-graphics web sites are still ahead of their time. Most visitors will have to wait..and wait..and wait...for all those nifty visuals to appear.
Moral of the story. Don't ditch your simple web pages yet! Keep your pages fast-loading and watch sales go up as more people stick around to click through your site. You can make your pages look like they have more graphics than they really do by (1) putting an eye-catching logo at the top of each page, (2) using a colored bullet to set off key points in the text, (3) using colored boxes and text that load instantly, and (4) repeating the same few graphics often throughout the site. Once a graphic loads into the visitor's computer, it doesn't have to load again and visitors can click almost instantly from page to page.
